Software Category

The Software Category feature in Zecurit allows IT administrators to group related software into meaningful categories, making it easier to manage, audit and report on software usage across the organization. This improves visibility, simplifies compliance tracking and enhances inventory organization.

Why Use Software Categories?

Grouping software by categories offers several advantages:

Benefit AreaDescription
Simplified Inventory Management– Quickly filter and view software by type (e.g., Productivity Tools, Security Software, Development Tools)- Eliminate clutter in the software inventory view
Enhanced License Tracking– Easily map software licenses to specific categories for better oversight and allocation
Improved Reporting & Audits– Generate reports by category (e.g., how many Antivirus products are deployed across Windows systems)- Helps during internal and external audits to justify software usage by category
Platform-Based Organization– Maintain OS-specific categorization to distinguish between Windows, Mac, and Linux software- Identify gaps or overlaps in application availability across platforms
Compliance & Standardization– Identify unapproved or redundant tools within a category (e.g., multiple PDF readers)- Establish standard toolsets per department or platform

ActionsEdit: Modify the category or associated software

Default Category: “Not Assigned”

  • All uncategorized software automatically appears under the “Not Assigned” category.
  • This ensures no software entry is overlooked and provides a quick view of software that needs classification.

Best Practices for Admins

  • Regularly review the “Not Assigned” list to keep your software inventory clean and organized.
  • Name categories clearly and consistently (e.g., use “Antivirus” instead of “Virus Scanner” or “AV”).
  • Use platform-specific categories to analyze platform distribution (e.g., “Remote Tools – Mac”).
  • Create categories per department use, such as “Design Tools”, “Engineering Tools” or “HR Utilities”.
  • Use categories to monitor license gaps or redundant software in the same category.
